The name Shortall in County Kilkenny Ireland dates back to the beginning of fixed surnames during the high medieval period (c. 1300). The Shortall's were prominent catholic land owners in the county from before this time, having arrived during the Norman conquests of England/Ireland (1100-1200). The land they took had been controlled by the Gaelic dynasts. The arrival of Oliver Cromwell's army by 1650, dealt a devastating blow to the Old English (Anglo-Norman Catholic) gentry. Following defeat many families stayed on as tenants of the county. The Williamite victory in Ireland effectively destroyed the Catholic order, and replaced it with a small number of Protestant landowners with most of the tenants Catholic. The name Shortall continued to be a common name throughout these periods. |
